First elected to the Texas House in 1989 and served through 1997. He was elected again in 2008 and has served since that time. Current term expires January 2027. Running for re-election; ran unopposed in the Republican primary for Texas House District 32 and will be on the November 2026 general election ballot.

Hunter served in the House as a Democrat from 1989 to 1997. In 2008, he switched to the Republican Party and was re-elected to his former seat.

Endorsed in the 2024 Republican primary election by Gov. Greg Abbott. Abbott is endorsing incumbents who supported his voucher bill, HB 1, in the fourth special session of the 88th Legislature.

In the 2018 election, Hunter was recommended favorably by Texans for Public Education, a grassroots educators' group that researched and rated candidates in the 2018 election based on their stances toward public schools
