First elected to the Texas Senate in 2014. Current term expires January 2027. Running for re-election in 2026.

Kolkhorst won a special election in December 2014 to fill the unexpired term of former Sen. Glenn Hegar, who was elected Comptroller. Kolkhorst previously served as a Texas State Representative from 2000 to 2014.

Endorsed in the 2020 general election by the Texas Home School Coalition, which supports using public funds for private and home-schools, giving private and home-schooled students greater access to public education services, and limiting state oversight of private and home schools. Kolkhorst also received the group's endorsement in the 2016 Republican primary election.
