First elected to the Texas House in 2022. Current term expires January 2027. Running for re-election; ran unopposed in the Democratic primary for Texas House District 38 and will be on the November 2026 general election ballot.

Gamez was the only candidate who filed to run in a May 2022 special election to fill the remainder of the term of former Rep. Eddie Lucio III, who resigned from this seat at the end of January 2022. Gamez was also uncontested on the November 2022 general election ballot for Texas House District 38, vying for a full term that began January 2023.

Gamez previously ran unsuccessfully for the Texas House in 2020.
