First elected to the Texas House in a 2016 special election. He was defeated in his reelection bid during the 2016 general election and again in 2018. Lujan then won a November 2021 special election to fill a vacancy in House District 118. He was subsequently elected for a full term in 2022. Current term expires January 2027.

*Lujan is running for the 35th Congressional District seat and is not seeking re-election in the 2026 Texas House race.


Endorsed in the 2024 Republican primary election by Gov. Greg Abbott. Abbott is endorsing incumbents who supported his voucher bill, HB 1, in the fourth special session of the 88th Legislature.

Endorsed in his 2021 special election as a "School Choice Champion" by the American Federation for Children, an organization founded by former U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos that advocates for private school vouchers.

Lujan also ran unsuccessfully for HD 118 in the 2006 Republican primary election.
